Short description: The Cape Town EDITION has opened at South Africa’s V&A Waterfront, marking the luxury lifestyle brand’s first hotel in Africa. With 142 rooms and suites, destination dining, a rooftop pool and architecture inspired by the historic harbour, the property adds a new international name to Cape Town’s premium hospitality market.
◉ African brand debut: The opening brings EDITION, part of Marriott International, to the continent for the first time.
◉ A 142-room waterfront property: Designed by Neri&Hu with local architectural partners, the hotel overlooks the superyacht marina and Table Mountain.
◉ More than accommodation: Restaurants, bars, wellness facilities, art and event spaces position the property as a destination for both international travellers and Cape Town residents.
A New Address on the Waterfront
The Cape Town EDITION officially opened on 27 October 2026 at Quay 7 on the V&A Waterfront, placing the hotel between the city’s historic harbour, a new superyacht marina and views of Table Mountain.
The opening represents a milestone for EDITION, the luxury lifestyle brand within Marriott International. Its portfolio spans established destinations including London, New York, Tokyo and Lake Como. Cape Town becomes its first location in Africa, adding a new market to its international expansion.
The property contains 142 guestrooms and suites, including a 112-square-metre Harbour Suite and a 240-square-metre Penthouse. Its location connects guests to Cape Town’s established dining, cultural and retail districts while positioning the hotel within one of the city’s most recognisable waterfront developments.

Design Rooted in Place
Designed by Neri&Hu in collaboration with Cape Town-based professionals, the building draws inspiration from the industrial character of the working harbour. Its low profile, pitched rooflines and textured brick façade reference the warehouses that once occupied the area. More than six million bricks were laid by hand.
At the centre is The Drum, an open-air cylindrical space with a spiral staircase leading to a viewing platform. The design makes the surrounding harbour and landscape part of the arrival experience rather than simply a backdrop.
African art and craft are integrated throughout the interiors, with work by artists including Zanele Muholi, Usha Seejarim and Chuma Maweni. Furnishings and textiles sourced from African makers add a regional dimension to the brand’s contemporary design approach.
Dining, Wellness and Social Life
The hotel’s positioning extends beyond overnight accommodation. Its food and beverage programme includes Shale, the signature restaurant led by executive chef Phil Carmichael, alongside rooftop venue EAVE, a Lobby Bar and Punch Room.
The rooftop combines dining with a heated swimming pool and views across the marina. Wellness facilities include a spa, a 24-hour gym and scheduled activities such as yoga, breathwork and sound baths. Meeting and event spaces include a ballroom accommodating up to 200 people.
This combination reflects the wider direction of luxury hospitality: hotels increasingly compete through the quality of their public spaces, culinary identity and cultural relevance, not only room standards.
For EDITION, attracting local residents as well as international guests will be important to establishing the property as a year-round social destination.
What It Means for Cape Town
The opening strengthens Cape Town’s position in the international luxury travel market. The city already benefits from its coastal setting, food culture, wine regions and access to outdoor experiences. An internationally recognised hotel brand adds another option for travellers seeking design-led accommodation and premium service.
The development also reinforces the V&A Waterfront’s evolution from a major retail and visitor precinct into a broader hospitality and lifestyle district. Its marina, restaurants, cultural venues and hotels create opportunities for guests to combine accommodation with dining, shopping and maritime experiences.
The commercial outcome will depend on occupancy, room rates, operating performance and the hotel’s ability to maintain demand beyond peak travel periods. The brand debut is significant, but its long-term impact will be measured by performance rather than opening-day attention.
The Competitive Luxury Market
For international hotel groups, Africa remains a varied market where destination appeal, local partnerships and operational execution matter as much as brand recognition. Cape Town offers a strong setting for a lifestyle-led hotel, but the premium segment remains competitive.
The Cape Town EDITION enters that market with a clear proposition: international brand standards, locally influenced design and a waterfront location built around food, culture and social experiences. Its first months of operation will show how effectively that combination translates into sustained demand.
