Short description: Rolex-owned Bucherer is preparing to take over a Rolex boutique in Honolulu, highlighting the growing role of brand-owned retail in the luxury watch industry.
◉ A new retail transition: Bucherer will assume control of the Ala Moana Center Rolex boutique on 1 January 2027, replacing long-standing retail partner Ben Bridge.
◉ A stronger Hawaiian presence: The takeover will bring Bucherer’s Rolex boutique network in Hawaii to four locations, while affected employees have been offered positions with the incoming operator.
◉ A changing distribution model: The move adds to a wider expansion of Bucherer-operated Rolex boutiques, raising questions about how the watchmaker balances direct retail control with independent authorised dealers.
A Boutique Changes Hands
Bucherer is set to take over the Rolex boutique at Honolulu’s Ala Moana Center from Ben Bridge at the start of 2027. The transition follows the closure of Ben Bridge’s store at the end of December, marking another change in the relationship between Rolex and its established retail partners.
The move is not expected to eliminate the boutique’s existing workforce. Reports indicate that all 14 affected employees have received employment offers from Bucherer, potentially allowing the team to continue serving customers under new management.
Ben Bridge will retain a presence in Hawaii through its multi-brand jewellery business and a standalone Tudor boutique in Waikiki.
The Rise of Brand-Owned Retail
The Honolulu transition reflects a broader development in luxury-watch distribution. Rolex acquired Bucherer in 2023 after decades of partnership, bringing one of the world’s largest luxury watch retailers into its corporate group.
The acquisition was presented as a way to preserve a long-standing relationship and maintain continuity. Rolex also stated that its existing authorised retail partnerships would remain unchanged.
However, Bucherer’s expanding role in dedicated Rolex boutiques has placed renewed attention on how the group manages its own stores alongside independent retailers.

Control Beyond Manufacturing
For luxury watchmakers, retail ownership can offer greater oversight of customer experience, store presentation and after-sales service. It can also provide a more direct view of consumer demand, particularly in a market where interest in sought-after watches frequently exceeds available supply.
Yet the model introduces a strategic tension. Independent authorised dealers have historically invested in specialist staff, prime retail locations and long-term customer relationships to represent prestigious watch brands. A brand-owned operator expanding within the same network changes the competitive landscape, even when formal dealer agreements remain in place.
The question is not simply how many boutiques Bucherer operates, but how the distribution network evolves as Rolex deepens its presence in retail.
A Wider Expansion
Recent boutique openings suggest Bucherer is taking a more prominent role in Rolex’s global retail footprint. The Honolulu takeover follows other openings and developments across the United States and international markets.
That expansion does not necessarily signal the end of independent retail. Established partners continue to invest in dedicated boutiques and premium customer experiences. But the balance between brand-owned and independent distribution is becoming a more closely watched part of the luxury-watch business.
For Bucherer, the Hawaii transition is a relatively small change in geographic terms. Strategically, it is another example of how ownership, retail execution and control over the customer relationship are reshaping the high-end watch market.
