JFA’s Hybrid Explorer

A New Flagship for Long-Range Cruising

French shipyard JFA Yachts has delivered Canoa, a 49.95-metre explorer yacht and the largest vessel built in the company’s history. Developed with Humphreys Yacht Design, the custom yacht is designed for extended voyages, combining long-range capability with engineering aimed at improving efficiency and onboard comfort.

The delivery marks a significant step for the Concarneau-based builder, best known for custom yachts and aluminium construction. Canoa brings together a distinctive hull-and-superstructure configuration, hybrid propulsion and systems intended to support travel far from conventional cruising infrastructure.

Hybrid Propulsion for Extended Voyages

Canoa uses a parallel hybrid system pairing two MTU 12V 2000 M72 diesel engines with electric motors. The arrangement allows the crew to select propulsion modes according to operating conditions, including quieter electric operation for harbour manoeuvres and lower-speed cruising.

A substantial battery bank and solar panels support the yacht’s onboard energy systems. Hybrid operation does not eliminate fuel use on long ocean passages, but it gives the crew additional options for managing energy demand and reducing noise and local emissions in selected situations.

Lightweight Construction, Built Around Efficiency

The yacht combines an aluminium hull with a glass-epoxy composite superstructure. This approach reduces weight above the waterline and lowers the centre of gravity, supporting stability and efficiency without sacrificing the strength required for long-range operation.

Humphreys Yacht Design developed the naval architecture and exterior styling, including a fast-displacement hull designed to balance economical cruising with higher-speed capability. Interior design was handled by Milan-based m2atelier.

Range Beyond 5,000 Nautical Miles

At an economical speed of 12 knots, Canoa has a reported range exceeding 5,000 nautical miles. That gives the yacht the capacity for substantial passages between refuelling stops and access to remote destinations.

The yacht accommodates 10 guests and has space for nine crew according to JFA’s published specifications. Four decks, stabilisation systems and a dynamic positioning system support comfort and operation during extended voyages. Dynamic positioning can maintain the vessel’s position without anchoring when conditions permit, although its use depends on operating circumstances.

What It Means for Explorer Yachts

Canoa reflects a broader development in the large-yacht market: hybrid systems are moving beyond smaller vessels into custom explorers built for long-distance travel. Their value depends not simply on electric propulsion, but on how engines, batteries, solar generation, hull design and onboard energy demand work together.

For JFA Yachts, the delivery demonstrates its ability to execute a larger and more technically complex project. For the wider industry, Canoa provides a real-world example of how hybrid engineering can be integrated into a long-range yacht without making electric-only operation the basis of the entire voyage.
