What Is MiCA and Why Does It Matter?

The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation is the European Union’s framework for specified crypto-assets and crypto-asset services. It aims to establish common requirements for authorisation, governance, conduct and client-asset safeguards across the EU.

  • Authorisation: Covered crypto-asset service providers generally need authorisation or another applicable legal basis.
  • Transparency: Regulatory rules set requirements for providers and certain crypto-asset disclosures.
  • Custody and conduct: The framework includes requirements relating to client assets, governance and the handling of clients.
  • Cross-border services: An authorised CASP may provide covered services in other EU states through the applicable notification and passporting framework.
Important: MiCA authorisation is not a guarantee that an exchange is risk-free, that every token is safe, or that losses will be reimbursed. Crypto-assets remain volatile, and protections depend on the product, service and legal entity involved.

Crypto Exchange Checklist

  • Check the provider’s exact legal name and authorisation in the official register.
  • Confirm that the licence covers the service you plan to use.
  • Compare trading fees, spreads, deposit costs and withdrawal fees.
  • Review custody arrangements, account security and recovery procedures.
  • Check which coins, transfers and features are available in your country.
  • Understand the risks of staking, lending, leverage and yield products before using them.

Check the MiCA Register

Do not rely only on an exchange’s marketing page. Use the official ESMA register and national regulators to verify authorisation, the legal entity and the services it is permitted to provide.

Risk Disclosure

Crypto-assets can be highly volatile and you may lose some or all of the money you invest. Regulatory authorisation does not guarantee returns or eliminate operational, custody, liquidity, technology or market risks.
