Big Tech’s $650 Billion AI Spending Surge Raises Stakes for Markets in 2026

The world’s largest technology companies are entering a new phase of the artificial intelligence race, with planned spending levels now reaching historic highs and reshaping equity market expectations for 2026.

Four major U.S. tech groups — Alphabet Inc., Amazon.com Inc., Meta Platforms Inc. and Microsoft Corp. — are expected to spend a combined roughly $650 billion this year on capital expenditures tied largely to AI infrastructure, according to Bloomberg reporting republished by Bloomberg Adria. That level of investment reflects one of the largest private-sector technology buildouts in decades, centered on data centers, high-end chips, networking systems, cooling equipment and power supply capacity needed to run advanced AI models.

Markets have largely rewarded the strategy so far, as investors continue betting that today’s infrastructure spending will secure tomorrow’s dominance in cloud computing, enterprise AI and digital advertising. However, the scale of investment is also intensifying pressure on management teams to prove returns.

According to the report, Amazon.com Inc. is planning around $200 billion in 2026 capital expenditure, while Alphabet Inc. may spend as much as $185 billion. Meta Platforms Inc. has indicated spending up to $135 billion, while Microsoft Corp. continues expanding aggressively through its Azure and AI ecosystem. (Bloomberg Adria)

The spending wave is already creating knock-on effects across the economy. Semiconductor producers, electrical equipment makers, engineering firms and utilities are among the secondary beneficiaries as hyperscalers race to secure capacity.

Yet analysts caution that such rapid expansion also raises the risk of overbuilding if commercial AI demand fails to scale quickly enough. Equity investors increasingly want evidence that revenue growth can justify soaring capex budgets.

That concern helps explain why some tech stocks have reacted negatively even after strong earnings: the market is no longer rewarding growth alone, but demanding efficiency and monetization discipline.

For European readers, including Slovenia, the story matters because these companies heavily influence global indices, pension funds and ETF portfolios. When mega-cap U.S. technology names move, global markets often follow.

The broader takeaway is that AI is no longer just a software trend — it has become a capital-intensive industrial race. In 2026, the winners may be determined not only by algorithms, but by who can finance and scale infrastructure fastest.
