Elfyn Evans is the 2026 World Rally Champion after one of the most dramatic finishes in recent WRC history. The Welshman secured his first world title at Rally Italia Sardegna on 4 October, ending years of near misses in the championship.
Evans and co-driver Scott Martin finished fifth in the rally, but that was enough to take the title after Toyota teammate Oliver Solberg lost crucial time in the final Power Stage.
Solberg had been on course to win both the rally and the championship. Then, just a few corners from the finish, he ran wide and went off into the sand. He recovered to complete the stage, but the lost time changed the championship outcome.
Solberg Wins the Rally
Solberg and co-driver Elliott Edmondson still took the rally victory in their Toyota GR Yaris Rally1, finishing 57.6 seconds ahead of Sébastien Ogier. Sami Pajari completed an all-Toyota podium in third.
The result highlights how different the rally victory and championship battle can be. Solberg delivered the fastest overall performance across the weekend, but Evans managed to secure the points that mattered most for the title.
Five Points Separate the Leaders
Evans finished the season with 243 points, ahead of Solberg on 238 and Pajari on 237. The five-point gap between the champion and runner-up shows just how close the final standings were.
For Evans, the achievement comes after five previous runner-up finishes. He becomes the first British world rally champion since Richard Burns in 2001.
Toyota had already secured the manufacturers’ championship, adding another major result to a season in which its drivers occupied the top three places in the final drivers’ standings.
A Season Changed by One Moment
The final result was shaped by more than one stage. Evans had suffered a puncture earlier on Sunday, losing time and leaving his title hopes hanging in the balance. Solberg appeared to have the advantage heading into the final test, but his mistake opened the door for Evans.
The championship had also taken an unexpected turn before the event. Rally Saudi Arabia was removed from the 2026 WRC calendar, making Sardinia the season finale rather than the penultimate round.
That change raised the stakes. There would be no later rally to recover lost points, and every decision on the final day carried greater weight.
What Comes Next for WRC
Evans enters the next season as world champion, while Solberg and Pajari have shown they can challenge for the title. Toyota’s strong result also reinforces its position at the top of the manufacturers’ standings.
For Evans, the title finally delivers the reward that had eluded him through several seasons of close championship battles. For Solberg, the rally win offers little consolation for a title lost so close to the finish.
The lesson from Sardinia is simple: in rallying, speed matters, but consistency and getting to the finish matter just as much.
