Ressence has unveiled the TYPE 10 DN Dark Night, a limited-edition mechanical watch that combines a sculpted titanium case, a three-dimensional oil-filled display and the brand’s first in-house-designed movement for an oil-filled model. Limited to 100 pieces, the release marks a significant step in the Belgian independent watchmaker’s technical development.
◉ A new mechanical foundation: The automatic RW-04 calibre delivers a 60-hour power reserve and drives the display through magnetic transmission.
◉ An unusual visual effect: An oil-filled chamber makes the orbital indicators appear almost suspended against the sapphire crystal.
◉ Limited production: Just 100 watches will be produced, with a launch price of CHF 45,000 excluding taxes.
A Different Approach to Time
Founded in Belgium, Ressence has built its identity around a distinctive interpretation of mechanical timekeeping. Instead of relying on conventional hands rotating around a fixed dial, its patented Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS) uses rotating discs and satellites to display time across a sculpted surface.
The TYPE 10 DN extends that philosophy into a dark-blue design. Its 41.5 mm Grade 5 titanium case flows into an integrated rubber strap, creating a continuous silhouette. A hard surface coating gives the case its deep blue appearance, while the rounded profile and double-domed sapphire crystals reinforce the watch’s sculptural character.
Despite its complex construction, the watch weighs approximately 82 grams, making lightweight wearability a central part of its design.
The Oil-Filled Display
The defining feature is the oil-filled display chamber. By filling the space above the dial with oil, Ressence reduces the optical distortion normally associated with viewing a dial beneath a crystal. The indications appear unusually close to the surface, creating an almost digital clarity while retaining a mechanical foundation.
The display presents hours and minutes alongside a second time zone, an oil-temperature indicator and a 120-second runner. The latter also serves a mechanical purpose, helping control movement within the oil-filled system when the watch experiences sudden shocks.
The dial’s minute track comprises 24 individual titanium segments. Alternating surface treatments and changing brushing directions create subtle shifts in reflected light as the watch moves.

Magnetic Engineering
The engineering challenge is separating the oil-filled display from the mechanical movement while allowing both to operate together.
Ressence addresses this with two sealed chambers: one containing the automatic movement in air and the other housing the display in oil. A rotating disc with micro-magnets on the movement side drives a corresponding disc inside the oil chamber. Magnetic coupling transfers the motion through an extremely thin titanium membrane, avoiding a conventional mechanical shaft between the two environments.
This arrangement allows the movement to remain in a dry chamber while the orbital display operates in oil. A dedicated expansion system accommodates changes in the oil’s volume as temperatures fluctuate.
The result is an unconventional architecture in which fluid, magnets and mechanical gearing work together to produce the watch’s signature visual effect.
Introducing the RW-04
The TYPE 10 DN is powered by the automatic RW-04 calibre, designed specifically for this watch. Its twin-barrel arrangement provides approximately 60 hours of power reserve, while the movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour.
The complete watch contains 538 components, including 196 in the ROCS 10 display module. The movement and display are therefore more than a conventional calibre paired with a decorative dial: the two systems form an integrated mechanical assembly.
The development also reflects Ressence’s wider move towards proprietary movements. Although the brand’s earlier watches relied on modified third-party calibres, its newer movement architecture gives it greater control over how the display and underlying mechanics work together.
Price and Availability
The TYPE 10 DN is limited to 100 numbered pieces and carries a launch price of CHF 45,000, excluding taxes. Availability is scheduled to begin in November 2026 following its presentation at WatchTime New York in October.
Its price places it firmly within the high-end independent watchmaking segment. The proposition is based less on conventional complications or precious-metal construction and more on its proprietary display, distinctive engineering and highly integrated design.
An Independent Watchmaking Statement
The TYPE 10 DN demonstrates how independent watchmakers can differentiate themselves through mechanical architecture rather than simply changing case materials or dial colours.
Its oil-filled display is not merely an aesthetic flourish: it shapes the movement, case construction and method of transmitting energy. The RW-04 provides a new foundation for that concept, while the limited production reinforces the watch’s specialist positioning.
For Ressence, Dark Night represents a convergence of design and engineering—a watch built around the idea that complex mechanics can produce a visually simple experience.
