CVC is expanding its sports investment strategy beyond football, rugby and tennis, adding a commercial platform built around equestrian competitions. Through its Global Sport Group, the private markets investor agreed to acquire a controlling stake in Equine Network from Growth Catalyst Partners.
The deal gives CVC exposure to a fragmented but commercially established US market spanning Western riding, showjumping, barrel racing and other equestrian disciplines. Equine Network operates around 40 competitions and supports more than 800 sanctioned third-party events, alongside membership services, content and other commercial activities.
One important date correction: CVC announced the agreement in January 2026, and Global Sport Group reported that the acquisition had been completed on May 20, 2026—not first announced in September.
Why Equestrian Sports Attract Investors
CVC estimates the US equestrian sports market at approximately $2.5 billion. Its appeal is not limited to spectators watching competitions. The wider ecosystem includes participants, horse owners, trainers, event organisers, sponsors, specialist products and recurring membership services.
That creates several potential revenue streams around a sport where participants can be highly engaged and spend significantly on equipment, training, travel and competition.
For investors, the opportunity is to consolidate these activities into a more organised commercial platform. A fragmented market can offer scope to improve event operations, expand sponsorship sales and develop digital content and data products across multiple competitions.
From Individual Events to a Commercial Platform
Equine Network brings together competitions across both Western and English riding disciplines. That breadth gives the business access to different audiences, participants and sponsors rather than relying on a single flagship event.
Its model also extends beyond the arena. Livestreaming, editorial content, digital audience engagement and member services can help turn individual competitions into a connected commercial network.
The strategic challenge is to grow those revenue sources without weakening the specialist communities that make each discipline valuable.
CVC’s Broader Sports Strategy
Equine Network is the latest addition to Global Sport Group, which holds investments across football, rugby, tennis, volleyball and equestrian sport. Its portfolio includes La Liga, Ligue 1, the Women’s Tennis Association and major rugby competitions.
The strategy centres on long-term ownership and shared commercial expertise. Rather than treating each sport as an isolated investment, the group can potentially apply lessons in sponsorship, media rights, data and fan engagement across its portfolio.
Michelle Wilson and George Barrios, former co-presidents of WWE and directors of Global Sport Group, became co-chairs of Equine Network following the transaction. Their experience in sports entertainment and commercialisation could help the business expand its audience and revenue base.
The Investment Case—and Its Risks
Equestrian sport offers access to a specialist audience with meaningful spending power, but commercial growth is not automatic. Events can be geographically fragmented, audiences vary by discipline, and expanding sponsorship or streaming revenue requires consistent content and reliable audience data.
CVC must also balance commercial scale with the character of individual competitions. A strategy that works for mainstream football or tennis may not translate directly to rodeo, barrel racing or showjumping.
The opportunity lies in professionalising the business while preserving the communities and participants that sustain it.
What Comes Next
The key indicators will be growth in sponsorships, membership services, digital audiences and the number and reach of competitions. Expansion into new markets or disciplines could provide further upside, but the financial contribution of each initiative will matter more than headline event numbers.
For CVC, the acquisition reflects a broader investment thesis: valuable sports businesses are not limited to globally famous leagues. Specialist competitions can also attract institutional capital when they combine loyal participants, recurring events and opportunities to build new commercial revenue.
Equine Network gives Global Sport Group a foothold in a different part of the sports economy. Its success will depend on whether that reach can be converted into sustainable growth.
