Delta Faces Fuel Pressure

Delta Air Lines reported record third-quarter revenue as strong travel demand helped offset a sharp increase in jet fuel costs. However, higher expenses are squeezing profitability and forcing the US airline to lower its full-year earnings outlook.

For the September quarter, Delta generated $20.2 billion in revenue under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Adjusted operating revenue reached $17.6 billion, with adjusted earnings of $1.72 per share. Adjusted operating income was $1.7 billion, reflecting the continued strength of its underlying business despite a challenging cost environment.

Fuel is the central pressure point. Delta expects to absorb approximately $6 billion in additional fuel costs during 2026, a substantial burden even for a carrier with strong pricing power and a broad premium-travel business.

The airline now forecasts full-year adjusted earnings of $5.10–$5.60 per share, down from its previous range of $6.50–$7.50. It expects approximately $2.5 billion in free cash flow and plans to repay more than $2 billion in debt this year.

Demand, however, remains resilient. Delta expects fourth-quarter revenue to grow approximately 20% year over year. Its outlook assumes an all-in fuel price of around $4.25 per gallon, including an estimated benefit from its refinery operations. The forecast remains exposed to further changes in energy prices and travel demand.

For investors, the results highlight a critical distinction: growing sales do not necessarily translate into stronger earnings when input costs rise rapidly. Delta’s ability to sustain ticket pricing, manage capacity and preserve cash flow will be central to its performance as it enters the final quarter of 2026.
